The Consumption of Sugar
Why does sugar have to taste so good but have such a bad effect on your body. If has such a bad effect, WHY is sugar added to EVERYTHING!
Sugar and refined carbs are linked to a myriad of health problems from diabetes to cancer. For those of you who ask why refined carbs are lumped in with pure sugar, it is because refined carbs are so processed that the conversion process in the body to convert carbs to sugar is almost too easy. Refined carbs are easily broken down into sugar and are therefore considered by many to be a sugar themselves. To add to this, point the avoidance of sugars and refined carbs can be instrumental in the process of optimizing hormones and avoiding other associated chronic diseases.
So, what is it that we should look for? Studies have shown that fructose (found in most sugar types) have the most impact on promoting insulin resistance. Insulin resistance being associated with obesity, prediabetes and diabetes (Spritzler, 2017).
Fact: just because honey is a natural source of fructose does not mean that it is good for your health. Infact, one study done on prediabetics showed that whether they consumed 1.8 ounces of honey or high fructose corn syrup and refined table sugar, the effect on their insulin levels and resistance were the same (Spritzler, 2017).
There are many ways that sugar can negatively impact your health, just to name a few:
- Causes sugar spikes and plummets
- Increases risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease
- Interferes with immune functions
- Causes early aging
- Affects cognition and behavior in children
- Increases stress
Take away: although sugar tastes great, it is not good for your health. Trying to avoid sugar, particularly fructose is important for overall health and wellbeing.
Yours truly,
Meg
