3 Ways Resetting Your Hormones

The HotFridayTalks

As you are probably already aware, hormones play a strong role in mental, physical and emotional health. Playing a major role in appetite, weight loss and mood. Hormones are a very important component when it comes to overall health, but is often looked over. With the busy and on-the-go lives we lead today hormone balance has never been so crucial.

There are a few things that we can do to natural reset/balance your hormone levels. This is because protein provides us with the amino acids our body’s need to regulate hormones in order to maintain muscle, bone and healthy skin. Let’s talk about ghrelin, this is your hunger hormone. When you eat enough protein, ghrelin is produced less and satiation hormones like PYY and GLP1 are produced more (Spritzler, 2017). PYY and GLP1 tell you that you are full, which is important with the concept of over eating (Spritzler, 2017). Overall, consuming adequate amount of protein induce the production of satiation hormones. Aim for 20-30g of protein each meal.

Exercise plays a major role in hormone regulation, especially in that of insulin levels and insulin sensitivity.  insulin in in charge of many things, such as the intake of sugar and amino acids into the bloodstream which can be used for energy and maintenance of muscle mass. Exercise is particularly important for those with high insulin levels. High levels of insulin are commonly associated with diabetes, heart disease, cancer and inflammation. So, with the help of exercise you can naturally help your insulin levels become regulated. Most types of activity are associated with the regulation of insulin levels: aerobics, strength and endurance. Being physically active as we age can also boost muscle maintaining hormone testosterone – this is great for the prevention of muscle wasting (Spritzler, 2017)

Last thing we will go over, consuming healthy fats to helps balance hormone levels. Much like exercise, high quality fats can help in the maintenance of insulin levels and as we know insulin plays a major role in our body’s health. Medium chain triglycerides (MCT) are a unique fat that are processed through the liver and used immediately as a source of energy (Spritzler, 2017). MCT can be found in coconut oil, palm oil or MCT oil which all can be bought at your local grocery store. Monosaturated fats found in olive oil have also proven to have a positive effect on insulin sensitivity within the body. These types of fats also induce the release of satiation hormones such as PYY, GLP1 and cholecystokinin (CCK) (Spritzler, 2017).

There are some any things we can do to help maintain and control our hormone levels. Most of us are already doing most things without even being aware of their effect on our hormones. A good take away from this is to eat protein and a healthy fat at every meal, as well as to exercise daily.
