Plantar Fasciitis and Bone Spurs - OrthoInfo - AAOS

This is a very common ailment than many people will suffer from in their life time. Plantar fasciitis involves the inflammation of the thick band of fascia that runs along the bottom of the foot, connect to the heel bone and the toes (2019).

People describe it as a sharp shooting pain that normally occurs with the first few steps in the morning. With movement the pain normally decreases. This is a common injury in runners, people who are overweight or those who wear shoes with inadequate support. To put is simply it happens to people who apply larger amount of stress to their feet.

Your plantar fascia is shaped like a bowstring in the foot, support the arch of the foot and absorbing the shock when you walk (2019). If the tension and stress on the bowstring become too great the fascia start to have micro tears (2019).

As per the Mayo Clinic the risk factors are as follows:

  • Age (most commonly found in those aged 40-60)
  • Certain exercises (distance runners, ballet – lots of stress on the heel)
  • Foot mechanics (flat footed, high arch or abnormal walking patterns)
  • Obesity
  • Certain occupations (that require you to stay on your feet)
