How to Exercise in the Heat
This is a great topic considering the current weather. It is hot and humid in the summers of Canada, so it is EXTRA important to exercise safely if you are choosing to do it outside!
Here are a few tips I suggest you do:
- Rest in the shade – this is important because exposing your body to too much heat can create more damage than good. So, between exercises and as you need to rest in the shade and cool off for a bit.
- Hydrate – once again I tell you to drink water. Surprise, surprise, it keeps you hydrated and allows your body to recover better.
- Electrolyte – When you are exercising in the heat you lose a lot of electrolytes through your sweat. So, it is important to replenish those electrolytes. You can do this by adding a bit of Gatorade to your water, adding some salt to your water (weird but it works).
- Have a buddy – this is a great one because in the heat if you are someone who pushes themselves pretty hard your risk of injury is higher in the heat. But also, a buddy can be there to motivate you to keep going and keep you accountable for staying hydrated.
- Time of day – of course if you are exercising at 2pm in the afternoon when the sun is at its peak it is going to be HOT. But if you can choose the time in which you exercise try something earlier in the morning or later in the evening when the sun isn't at its hottest!
Yours truly,
Meg
