Getting Older
It's inevitable that we are all getting older by the second, skin will sag and bones will ache. What can we do to stop it?
Absolutely nothing, sorry to burst your bubble haha. We will all get older but there are some things we can do to help our bodies through the process. As I mentioned briefly before aging has a number of physiological changing that come along side it.
With aging comes along some controllable and uncontrollable factors. The aging process causes a phenomenon called sarcopenia, fancy word to says loss of muscle mass and strength as age increases (Seguin & Nelson, 2003). Obviously, this can be exacerbated by certain chronic diseases. If you have followed me for long enough you know That chronic disease CAN BE PREVENTED, DELAYED, MANAGED or AVOIDED for the most part!
Current research says that strength-training as older adults have the ability to counter the weaknesses and frailty associated with the aging process (Seguin & Nelson, 2003). Per Seguin and Nelson when done regularly (2-3 times a week), exercise can build muscle mass and strength as well as PRESERVE BONE DENSITY, VITALY and INDEPENDENCE with age. These authors also found that strength training to reduce the risk pf osteoporosis and signs and symptoms of a big list of chronic diseases (heart disease, T2DM, arthritis, depression and even sleep, etc.)!
Become informed ask a local kinesiologist what you can do to improve your health and prevent decline!
