Getting Older & Gaining Weight
Our metabolism is ever changing. It seems like certain times in our lives we can eat ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. What a teenager can eat vs. What an older person can eat without gaining weight is very different.
Karolinska Institut in Sweden studied why this is true. They found that the lipid turnover (the rate the lipids\fats are removed or stored) in the fat tissue decreases throughout the aging process, which leads to easier weight gain despite the things we do to counter the weight gain (Arner et al., 2019).
These researchers have determined that the processes in our fat tissue regulates changes in body weight during aging in a way that is independent from other factors (Arner et al., 2019). This is great because it could open up new ways to treat obesity. Prior to this research studies have shown that one way to speed up lipid turnover is to exercise more (Arner et al., 2019).
Obesity is and has been declared an epidemic for years. I believe we need to approach this in a different way because the numbers of obese persons and children are on the rise. Obesity is one of the leading causes of death in Canada and the States. Protect yourself, control the controllables!
