Confused About your Diet?

Article 1 of 6: The Basics of Nutrition..... - Huntsland Nutrition

For the past few years, I like many others have been utterly confused about how we should eat. What nutritional approach is best? It took me a while to understand that the truth is there is no one right answer. People are their own unique selves. This means that the diet has to follow this as well.

There are so many variables in terms of goals, dietary restrictions, lifestyles, cultures, religion, beliefs, ect. With all these variables I cannot say that there is one diet better than another. But I do believe there are some key points that make a lifestyle (diet) successful:

  1. Consistent
  2. Realistic
  3. Specific

We find these through trial and error unfortunately. Those who are the most successful over time will tell you the same. What worked amazingly well for one person does not mean that it will work for you.

You need to be CONSISTENT. Find an eating habits that fit your lifestyle, whether that is eating three meals a day or six; it could be eating high fat diets or high protein. If you can find a diet that you can be consistent with, this is half the battle! Eating healthier is a lifestyle, it is not temporary.

REALISTIC. This means that looking at your lifestyle you need to determine what is a realistic nutrition plan for yourself. For some people cutting out carbs works amazing and is very realistic for them because they aren’t someone who eats very many to start with. For others carbs are an essential part of their overall health and therefore cutting out carbs is not realistic.

Goal SPECIFIC. This is very important because depending on your goals a certain diet can actually be detrimental to their goals. If your goals are to gain muscle mass and you are a vegan, this makes it very difficult to hit protein goal through food in order to gain muscle. The accessibility of vegan products is not always there. This can also mean specific to you. As in some people are intolerant to certain foods.

A diet should be consistent, realistic and specific. What is consistent, realistic and specific will change throughout life and that is absolutely fine. Your diet can adjust as well.

This probably isn’t the answer most of you were looking for but this is what I have found works. TRIAL AND ERROR – this is a part of life.

Yours truly,

Meg
