Power, Strength, Endurance
When I was training people regularly, a question I got A LOT is how do you decide how many reps and sets to do. Well this all depends on the individual goal. Most commonly you will see people working at ranges between 12-15, the toning range. At the 1-7 range is power, 8-12 range you are mainly working on strength, 12-15 is for toning, 15+ is more muscular endurance.
Each range is going to overlay a little bit, meaning if you are working at the higher end of the toning (15 reps) you will be working muscular endurance. It is a complicated thought but go with it!
Why is there a range? This is because at the lower end of the range you want the exercise to become difficult, towards the end you want to struggle to do the last couple reps!
Rule of thumb - as the reps go up the sets go down!
Yours truly,
Meg
